The Iowa Stars won their first-round playoff series. Division finals start Wednesday against Chicago. Maggie and I are going to Game 4 Tuesday night in Des Moines, anybody else interested?

I know there probably aren’t many sports fans out here, just thought I’d throw it out.

//edit: That’s Tuesday the 8th, not the 1st ;)

One week ’til camping!

Saylorville has been put forward as a destination, and we know it’s going to be open. Unless anybody else has better ideas, we’ll plan on going there.

Who’s all bringing what? Maggie and I will have a cooler and can bring some cooking stuff, esp. the cast iron pans.

I am so, so spoiled in regards to Interface Builder. I’m working on learning Java GUI tools, and it’s like pulling teeth. All of the graphical design tools suck, so I’m basically coding everything by hand.

It’ll be worth it though. Since Microsoft has basically declared VBA to be deprecated, sometime in the future all of our rickety scheduling “software” at work is going to go boom. Hopefully by that time I can have things figured out well enough to have written something up in Java using MySQL as a backend to replace it.

I’m sick of futzing with it every time I want to change something. Not worth it.

Sorry for the downtime, I just upgraded to the lastest 2.0 branch of WordPress, thereby breaking threaded comments in the old theme. I don’t have the time or desire to fix it at the moment, so the default theme is the order of the day until I do.

Maybe I’ll suck it up and upgrade to 2.1………naaaaaah.

So, Maggie and I aren’t terribly keen on keeping the little white shitbox around any longer, since we figured it actually costs us more in insurance every year than the damn thing is worth.

So, if you know of anybody looking to sell a reasonable-quality car at a decent price, send them our way. We’d prefer something 10 years old or less, and it must have less than 100k miles. It needs to be able to get as far as Marshalltown and back occasionally, and not previously owned by a smoker.

So, we’re going camping Saturday afternoon May 5th thru Monday afternoon May 7th. If you’d be interested in coming, speak up. We haven’t decided where yet, either, so if you have ideas on that front, let them be known.

And then the ants came… posted at 2:51 PM

So, some of you may know that we’ve had an ant problem the past couple of weeks or so… Well, Maggie found the source today. Apparently there’s an ant hill… in the hallway outside our apartment.

Wow.

Well, I’ve spent a little quality time with Windows Vista the past couple of days, now that Boot Camp supports it. For the most part, it’s a big fat “meh.” As far as the software applications go, there’s nothing really new or innovative. Flip3D is useless at best. However, I think the visuals trump Mac OS X, and I think I prefer Microsoft’s “dashboard” implementation, which is an always-on sidebar where gadgets are neatly lined up on one side and ready to be used without any key presses, unless you happen to have a window obscuring them. I think that approach works especially well with widescreen displays.

I’ll be playing around more with it in the coming days, including installing World of Warcraft in Vista and checking out the performance there.
