Is that really YOU that is reading this?

StudioMan

So, I realized when sitting down to work on StudioMan last night that I’ve kind of lost touch with what I originally planned on StudioMan to be. Also, I’ve learned a lot more about Cocoa and programming in general since I started. So, I think it’s time to wipe the slate clean and start from scratch. I’ll probably pull some of the code that I’ve already done into it, but there will be a new UI which focuses more on what’s important and less on what is more there for utility.

I’ll start uploading to SVN once I get something concrete done.

An example given during a discussion about natural selection:

A boy is born with two livers. He grows up, comes to Iowa State, joins a fraternity. He has a distinct survival advantage!

Nutshell posted at 10:49 AM
friends, school, work

So, it’s been an interesting couple of days.

  • Had a reading quiz yesterday in Philosophy over an assignment where he really didn’t tell us how much of it to read… it was a two-day reading, and his exact instructions were “get a good start on it.” He quizzed us on stuff that was on the last five pages.
  • I tried to kick down a doorjamb and rewarded myself with a (likely) broken toe. Best part is, Student Death is apparently closed today so I can’t go in to get it looked at! And since my insurance is through the university, I have to go through them to get covered, unless it’s an emergency (which, while painful, I think a broken toe doesn’t quite qualify). I’ll just tape it up and hobble on it for a couple of days, sounds like that’s what would happen anyway. Advil is my friend.
  • We started moving into trailers at work yesterday. There’s actually more space in the trailers than in the old offices, it’s almost kind of nice. The layout isn’t great, but there’s definitely more space to work with. Trying to move stuff with a hobbled foot wasn’t fun, but it was nothing a little Advil and can-do attitude couldn’t fix.
  • Much to my dismay, I got a letter from the University yesterday telling me that I’m not eligible for aid this SUMMER either; originally I had thought I was only on the hook for fall. I’m putting in a request for eligibility extension, but I’m not sure how it will fly.
  • I think I made a friend’s day this morning. It felt really good. She’s been going through a rough time, so she deserved it.

Well, that’s the rundown… time to get ready so I can go have my advisor fill out his part of the extension form, head over to student health and see if they’re REALLY closed or if somebody forgot to turn of the phone message, and then get to work.

work

So, today officially begins ten months of working out of trailers while the office area is demolished and reconstructed.

It’s going to be a long year, but it will definitely be worth it when it’s all said and done.

Yay for being able to get *work* done without being interrupted by drivers and phones!

So, as of last week, our cellular contract with Cingular is eligible for phone upgrades. So now, I’m in a dilemma. Right now, being able to afford an iPhone at $499 would be a stretch. But, with all the rumors floating around about some sort of other financial incentive (or an all-out price drop), I’m nervous to just move now and get the Motorola RAZR V3xx that I’ve been looking at, especially since that once I make a choice, I’m pretty much locked into it for two years, and right now the iPhone is a superior choice if I can afford it.

In other news, after three days of class I’m already sick of it. Is it July 6 yet?

Triannual grades update posted at 12:58 PM
school

Com S 227: Java Programming I: B+
I wasn’t expecting quite as good of a grade here, but she adjusted the grading scale down at the end of the year, a nice pleasant surprise.

French 310: Pronunciation and phonetics: B
No surprise.

French 314: Textual Analysis: B
This class kicked my ass. I was pleasantly surprised by the grade, since I hadn’t gotten better than a C on any exam.

French 472: Modern French History: B
After how the final went, I was extraordinarily surprised by this; I don’t think I got better than 50% on the final.

Pol S 215: Intro to Political Science: B+
I was slightly disappointed here, this was supposed to be my easy A, but I guess I just missed one too many quizzes. Oh well, it was pretty boring and worthless anyway.

On deck this summer: FSHN 101 and Phil 343. GEN EDS FOR THE WIN!!! Not.
Then I’ll just need to take French 333 and Ling 286 in the fall, and I’m done. Yep, you heard me right: Done.

Backup plan? posted at 11:26 AM
uncategorized

So, the NWS has started hinting at the possibility of severe weather this weekend. *sigh*

Do we want to have a backup plan, or just take it as it goes? Right now it looks like the chances are small, so I’m cool with riding it out unless it starts to look worse.

Oh, and on a completely unrelated note, I finally broke down and installed Skype. My screen name is the same as my AIM screenname.
