OK, so not really. posted at 7:03 PM
computers

First of all, yes I did get an iPhone. But my delirious sleep-deprived title of last night had very little truth to it. In fact, if you haven’t figured this out already, I’m addicted to technology. This is a fact that I have come to terms with. I enjoy it immensely.

So, onto the phone itself. It’s quite nice. Is it worth $499? Arguable. However, as far as phones go, the ease of use and versatility of it blow away anything I’ve ever used. This is good; phones I’ve used before seemed more like a crutch than anything; I carried it because I needed to; it was a tool that did a job, some better than others. This phone is actually a pleasure to use, and I don’t have to dick around with it (too much; certainly less than any other phone I’ve used) to get it to do what I want.

That being said, there are shortcomings. The most noticeable one to me right off the bat was the lack of AIM. I’m sure somebody’s web-based app will take care of this shortly, but as of now there’s nothing. Also, the EDGE network may be a bit of a liability. I understand the reasoning behind using it over 3G (and considering we don’t even have 3G AT&T service in Ames yet, it’s kind of moot for me right now), but it really undermines the “internet device” part of the description.

So, here’s my three pluses and minuses.

+ Fun to use.
+ Adaptable interface. Makes things much more intuitive and easy to use
+ Integration. My calendars, e-mail, contacts, music all in one place. It’s nice to have it all.

- A few annoying interface quirks and inconsistencies
- Lack of AIM (or any other “communication” besides SMS and voice)
- Slow internet if you’re not at a WAP

Keynote posted at 1:08 PM

Safari on Windows. I’m not sure how to react to this. It’ll sure make using Windows a little more enjoyable.

Leopard: Evolutionary, not revolutionary. I think the Desktop/Finder updates were long overdue, but it’s nothing that’s fundamentally going to change the way I use my computer.

To me, I think the greatest thing was at the beginning… the huge show of support from game studios that had abandoned the Mac, especially EA. I feel sorry for the guys at Aspyr, but I’m glad that studios see the value in making timely Mac ports on their own.

Also… anybody know exactly -how- we’re supposed to be doing the iPhone development? I’d like to have a CyRide schedule reader available at launch, but I see no mention of the iPhone development information outside of the keynote.

Seat belts posted at 9:12 PM
uncategorized

I just read yet another story about people dying in a car crash, who were not wearing seat belts.

I just don’t understand. Why is something so simple, that has such immense benefit, so hard? What on earth would possess somebody to NOT wear a seat belt when they’re driving or riding in a car?

I could be cynical and go the natural selection route, but I’m not in a cynical mood tonight.

In other news, I need a vacation.
