Some video from Friday’s storm. The YouTube compression loses a little bit of detail; if I get enough demand I’ll post the raw version here (250MB).

I fixed up the stylesheet for Firefox; the look should now be pretty much the same between FF and Safari, minus the extra effects in Safari.
Windows users are still left out a little bit though due to the lack of a suitable alternative for Helvetica Neue Ultralight.
So, it’s been a long time since I made a post about life in general. So, here goes…

The site should now work with those other browsers again. I’ve added the basic browser-checking code and a script to open the sidebar. As I get the motivation over the next few days/weeks I’ll be adapting the stylesheet to make the FF version more readable, if not exactly what I had originally intended.
And yes, I’m going to clean up the content of the sidebar, I’ve just been lazy the last few days.
Made a couple of changes involving the sidebar. The sidebar was the only part of the site that required any JavaScript. I removed that and used CSS transforms to animate. Simply mouse over to open it; there’s no reason for it to stay open so it’ll shut back up when you mouse out. Because of this change the site is temporarily shutting anybody out using a non-WebKit browser. After I wake up today I intend to write a little user-agent code into the backend to re-add the JavaScript for Firefox so it’s useable again with FF, while not unnecessarily loading the JS libraries if it’s running Safari.
It’s a race against time and sleep as I try and type this out, but I’ll do my best to summarize now and elaborate later. First of all, if you’re not using Safari 3.1+, you are missing out. This theme was designed from the ground up for Safari. There are a lot of CSS2/CSS3 effects that only Safari currently implements, including (but not limited to) rounded corners and drop shadows on boxes, text shadows, and CSS transforms and transitions. Almost every effect you see is pure CSS, and the few that aren’t are courtesy of Prototype and Scriptaculous. If you want to see the site as it was meant to be seen, grab Safari from Apple’s website. I’ll put a more in-your-face warning up soon. Everything should still be legible in Firefox, but no guarantees beyond that.
In addition, you’ll be even closer to the intended display if you’re on a Mac, as the site uses the Helvetica Neue Ultralight font almost exclusively. It will still look decent with plain old Helvetica (which is what you’ll get if you’re looking at it on a PC), but you’ll miss some of the clean lines and the integration between font and design.
While things don’t look (or act) half bad as they are, the site should still be considered beta. I’ll be working to clean up a few things and add some new functionality, but the basics should be working. Click the bar to the left to expand the sidebar and get at the links and archive. Comments should also be working without issue.
Let me know if you’re using Safari and you happen to notice something acting weird. I did take the opportunity to upgrade Wordpress to 2.5.1, so there may be something I missed.
Ok, eyelids stronger than willpower right now, time for sleep.
In odd-request-ville… anybody happen to have or know anyone who has a Radeon 9700 Pro or All-In-Wonder that they don’t use anymore? I’m trying to resurrect my old Windows box since I don’t need it for PVR purposes anymore, and the fan on my All-In-Wonder has crapped out, so I’m trying to replace it.
Of course, I suppose if I can’t find one I can start shopping around for an X800/X850. I certainly don’t need the All-In-Wonder part of it anymore, especially since if I really feel the need to do TV-in again I have the Hauppauge card.
Just a quick heads up for those of you that heard about the tornado in western Omaha early this morning, we’re ok and intact; the tornado passed about a mile southeast of us. Some homes were pretty severely damaged and the Walmart about a mile east of us had part of its roof blown off, but we made it through untouched.
More updates on life in general coming, as I’m still adjusting to my switch to nights.
