Just a quick heads up for those of you that heard about the tornado in western Omaha early this morning, we’re ok and intact; the tornado passed about a mile southeast of us. Some homes were pretty severely damaged and the Walmart about a mile east of us had part of its roof blown off, but we made it through untouched.

More updates on life in general coming, as I’m still adjusting to my switch to nights.

Summary:

  • Turned 25. This getting old thing can stop now.
  • Found a place to live in Omaha. It’s real nice. I’ll be headed back over there in a couple weeks, if I remember I’ll bring my camera and take pictures.
  • Wrote some real code for the first time in several weeks. Finally worked through a problem in StudioMan that had been stumping me for awhile. Starting writing code for the scheduling algorithm.
  • Picked up Super Smash Bros. Brawl (well, I guess that was more the week before) and Guitar Hero III. Spent far too much time playing both.

Can you believe we’re at 8 weeks already?

  • I have no motivation. None. Even the knowledge that I’ll be a college graduate in 8 weeks unless something horrible happens is giving me no motivation right now.
  • For the first time in my life, I have no idea where I’ll be a year from now. Maggie is looking at jobs in the Des Moines area, around Minneapolis (we’re actually headed up there tonight for an interview tomorrow), in Wisconsin, and in Illinois. I’d like to stay around at least for a little while since I’ve got such a good thing going at work, but it all depends on how lucrative the offers are.
  • I’m trying to wrap my head around Windows web development. It’s painful. However, it may be the only option for some things we’d like to implement at work, since the City IT department appears to be hostile to anything non-Windows. Hopefully I’ll be able to implement something using MS Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express.
  • Patiently sitting on my $100 Apple store credit, waiting for Leopard, hoping the Seagate 160GB notebook drives come back in stock at Newegg before then so I can snatch one up. I stupidly did not write the product key for my MSDN copy of Windows Vista on the disc, so I need to find some way to retrieve it from within Windows before I wipe/reinstall.

That’s… that’s about it.

I caved. posted at 10:57 PM
computers, family, work

Now installing Windows XP Pro on my MacBook Pro. I want to see just how much faster Warcraft DOES run, and I want to try out New Super Mario Bros. before going out and buying a DS, since that’s half the reason I want one at the moment.

Other high(low?)lights…

  • Work this summer has been mediocre at best. I signed up for vacation relief as I usually do to bump my status hours (what determines vacation/sick leave earnings), thinking it wouldn’t be used, as usual. Boy was I wrong. I’ve been working near-40 hour weeks… which is great, except I have no time off. Getting time off is nearly impossible… this weekend, I was barely able to get Saturday off, but not Sunday (yes, that means we won’t be able to go camping :( At least we can get the tux stuff done though).
  • Wedding stuff isn’t coming along… We need to get the invitations sent, but I have had absolutely NO motivation to do it, and Maggie has no time between her class and work. We’re going to sit down and try and finish them Wednesday night and Thursday, but… blargh. Can’t this be done with already?
  • This place is a complete disaster. I’m working on cleaning things up a bit while my computer is being defiled, but, as usual, I just don’t feel like I’m getting anywhere.
  • And every day my primary monitor fades more and more into whiteness… sometime this summer I think I’m going to get a Dell 2007WFP (unless the 20″ Apple Cinema Display can be found at a comparable price). That’s some nice screen real estate right there.
  • I discovered Sudoku tonight. My there be mercy on my soul.
  • THIS KEYBOARD FUCKING SUCKS!

Stress. posted at 6:36 PM

So last night, we got a phone call that Maggie’s grandma was in the hospital. They were visiting in town, and I guess she was having trouble breathing. So, Maggie’s parents took her to the hospital, and her sister came over. We finally got a call a couple of hours later that she was home and ok. I guess they never really figured out what happened, but at least it all turned out all right. Then I had to go to bed to get to work early this morning. How hard do you think it is to sleep after something like that?

Sorry we weren’t able to do anything yesterday Meridith, we just weren’t sure what was going on and didn’t want to have you come over and then need to leave five minutes later.

Evening schedule:
Wed 12/21: Maggie and me Christmas (since it’s the only time we have!)
Thur 12/22: Maggie trombone practice
Fri 12/23: Maggie’s parents Christmas
Sat 12/24: My parents Christmas; Christmas Eve service at CUMC
Sun 12/25: My grandparent’s Christmas

…wow.

In other words, a little birdy just told me that the Wordpress 2.0 release is nearing, so I’m going to wait to do any template updating until that’s out and I get a hang of any new template hooks it might have.

Grandpa’s new ear posted at 4:01 AM
family

From an e-mail I just got from dad:

Your Grampa is doing really well with his new ear - better than anyone expected - even the doctors. First time in years that I’ve been able to carry on a conversation with my dad - brought tears to me eyes.

(For those of you who don’t know, which is most of you, my grandfather has been deaf for almost ten years. Which means he’s never heard a concert of mine. He had surgery in May for an experimental implant that takes sounds and converts them to electrical impulses, directly stimulating the aural nerves (in other words, a replacement ear). So yeah, this is a big deal.)
